Check Out Your Car's Air Conditioning System

car-maintenance2-seriesThis issue of the Automotive Maintenance Series offers advice you can use to keep your car's air conditioning system in good working order. Doing preventative maintenance before your next long drive will give you greater peace of mind and might also prevent insurance claims.

Are you planning a road trip? Having your car’s air conditioning system checked out by your local auto tech, even if  has been cooling properly so far could keep you from being stranded on the road during the dog days of summer with nothing but hot air belching from the vents.

And if your air conditioning system is not cooling as it should, then that appointment with your auto technician is a must.  Have your tech check the electric cooling fan motor near the condenser.  A lack of air flow across the condenser could be the problem.

It's also important to have your mechanic check the level and pressure of FREON®. Back in the day, if your air conditioning unit was not cooling as well as it should, you could just stop by your auto service shop and have the system recharged with refrigerant. But now, if your system has a refrigerant leak it is a more serious matter.

The auto industry's attitude change has occurred because scientists now know that FREON®, a chlorinated fluorocarbon (CFC) contributes to the depletion of the earth's ozone layer. Because of this, the auto manufacturers have greatly improved the materials used in the hoses, lines and seals of their air conditioning systems to prevent such refrigerant leakage. Also, repair shops are required by newer federal and state regulations to have the correct training and equipment to handle air conditioning refrigerants.

How about your auto insurance?  have you wondered whether it can be impacted by the level of maintenance of your vehicle? Perhaps it's time to sit down with your insurance agent to discuss the details. Here at the the Craig Mader Insurance Agency, in Crofton, MD, we are available to answer your auto insurance questions and/or to assist you with a no-obligation car insurance policy review upon your request.
